The increasing order of the rate of\[HCN\] addition to compounds I-IV is (A)\[HCHO\]                      (B)\[C{{H}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}\] (C)\[PhCOC{{H}_{3}}\]                   (D)\[PhCOPh\]     AIEEE  Solved  Paper-2006

    A) \[I<II<III<IV\]

    B) \[IV<II<III<I\]

    C)        \[IV<III<II<I\]

    D) \[III<IV<II<I\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Addition of HCN is nucleophilic addition depends on the following two factors. (i) Greater the electron deficiency of carbonyl group higher the rate of reaction.            (ii) Sterical hinderence decrease the rate of reaction.         Hence, the order is \[Ph-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  O \\  || \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,-Ph<C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  O \\  || \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,-C{{H}_{3}}\] \[<C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  O \\  || \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,-C{{H}_{3}}<\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  O \\  || \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{HCH}}\,\]
