A car moving with a speed of 50 km/h, can be stopped by brakes after atleast 6 m. If the same car is moving at a speed of 100 km/h, the minimum stopping distance is     AIEEE  Solved  Paper-2003

    A) 12m

    B)       18m

    C)       24m

    D)       6m

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    From equation of motion, \[{{v}^{2}}={{u}^{2}}+2as,\]. we get                     \[0={{\left( 50\times \frac{5}{18} \right)}^{2}}+2\,a\times 6\]                     \[a=-16\,m/{{s}^{2}}\](here, a = retardation) Again         \[{{v}^{2}}={{u}^{2}}+2\,as\]                     \[0-{{\left( 100\times \frac{5}{18} \right)}^{2}}-16\times 2\times s\]                     \[s=\frac{{{(100\times 5)}^{2}}}{18\times 18\times 32}=24.1\approx 24\,m\]
