Which one of the following substances has the highest proton affinity?   AIEEE  Solved  Paper-2003

    A) \[{{H}_{2}}O\]

    B)              \[{{H}_{2}}S\]

    C) \[N{{H}_{3}}\]

    D)       \[P{{H}_{3}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Proton affinity it means affinity for proton i.e., basicity \[N{{H}_{3}}\] is more basic than others due to presence of lone pair on nitrogen atom. It donates the lone pair of electron or accept the proton easily. Phosphorous is not suitable as that it has large size.
