An aqueous solution of \[1\,M\,NaCl\] and \[1\,M\,HCl\] is   AIEEE  Solved  Paper-2002

    A) not a buffer but \[pH<7\]

    B) not a buffer but \[pH>7\]

    C) a buffer with \[pH<7\]

    D) a buffer with \[pH>7\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The solution, which resist change in pH on dilution or with the addition of small amouts of acid or alkali are called buffer solutions. Acidic buffer is the solution which contain equimolal quantities of weak acid and its salt with a strong base. e.g., \[C{{H}_{3}}COOH+C{{H}_{3}}COONa\]. NaCI is a salt of strong acid with a strong base and HCI is a stron acid. So, an equeous solution of 1 M NaCI and 1 M HCI is not a buffer solution while it is acidic in nature. So, its \[pH<7\].
