AFMC AFMC Solved Paper-2010

  • question_answer
In an organic compound, phosphorus is estimated as

    A)  \[M{{g}_{2}}{{P}_{2}}{{O}_{7}}\]

    B)  \[M{{g}_{3}}{{(P{{O}_{4}})}_{2}}\]

    C)  \[{{H}_{3}}P{{O}_{4}}\]

    D)  \[{{P}_{2}}{{O}_{5}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

In Carius method, the weighed organic compound (containing phosphorus) is heated with cone \[\text{HN}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\]followed by \[\text{MgC}{{\text{l}}_{\text{2}}}\]in the presence of \[N{{H}_{4}}Cl\]and \[N{{H}_{4}}OH.\]By this magnesium ammonium phosphate, \[MgN{{H}_{4}}P{{O}_{4}}\]is formed which on ignition gives magnesium pyrophosphate \[(M{{g}_{2}}{{P}_{2}}{{O}_{7}}).\] From the amount of magnesium pyrophosphate, the percentage of phosphorus is calculated as % of \[=\frac{62}{222}\text{  }\!\!\times\!\!\text{  }\frac{\text{wt}\text{.of}\,\text{M}{{\text{g}}_{\text{2}}}{{\text{P}}_{\text{2}}}{{\text{O}}_{\text{7}}}}{\text{wt}\text{.of substnce taken}}\text{  }\!\!\times\!\!\text{  }100\]
