Cell elongation in intemodal regions of the green plants takes place due to

    A)  indole acetic acid

    B)  cytokinins

    C)  gibberellins

    D)  ethylene

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Gibberellin promotes intemodal elongation in a wide range of species. This intemodal elongation phenomenon is known as blotting. Gibberellin is a plant growth hormone, which was first time obtained from a fungus Gibberellafujikuroi (Fusariummoniliformi).                 Indole acetic acid is a natural auxin. Auxins control several kinds of plant growth processes like cell elongation, apical dominance, weed control, parthenocarpy etc.                 Cytokinins control cell division, cell enlargement and differentiation, delay in senescence etc.                 Ethylene is a gaseous hormone which stimulates transverse growth but retards the longitudinal one. It is a fruits ripening hormone.
