In polytene chromosomes dark bands are visible. These bands are formed by the aposition of:

    A) protein particles

    B) chromomeres on chromonemata

    C) nucleosomes

    D) none

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Polytene chromosomes was reported by Balbiani (1881) from cells of salivary glands of insect larvae. Polytene chromosomes contain several dark stained regions called bands seprated by lighter or less stained area called inter bands. These dark bands are hetro chromatin (geneticaly inert) area. Comparison between bands and inter bands of polytene chromosomes
    S.  No. Bands Inter bands
    1. Feulgen positiveareas. Feulgennegativeareas.
    2. Stain intensely with basic stains. Comparatively less stained.
    3. Absorb ultraviolet light at 2600\[{{A}^{{}^\circ }}\]. Absorb little UV radiations.
    4. Findings indicate that these are the regions of high DNA concentration. Their findings indicate that these are the regions of low DNA concentration.
    5. Chromonemata (unit chromatid) tightly packed. Chromonematarelatively extended.
