AFMC AFMC Solved Paper-2006

  • question_answer
Recent reports of acid rains in big industrial cities are due to the effect of atmospheric pollution by:

    A) morerelase of \[N{{O}_{2}}\] and \[S{{O}_{2}}\] by burning of fossil fuels

    B) morerelase of \[C{{O}_{2}}\] by burning of coal/wood cutting of forests and increasingpopultions

    C) excessive release of \[N{{H}_{3}}\] by coal gas/industries

    D) excessive release of \[CO\] by incomplete combustion of carbonaceous fuels

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The acid rain is in fact the cocktail of \[{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]and\[HN{{O}_{3}}\]. The \[S{{O}_{2}}\,\]and\[N{{O}_{2}}\] produced during the combustion of coal and petroleum reacts with water vapour and formed H2S04 and HN03 respectively. \[2S{{O}_{2}}+{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}2S{{O}_{3}}\] \[S{{O}_{3}}+{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\]                                 \[2NO+[O]\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}{{N}_{2}}{{O}_{5}}\] \[{{N}_{2}}{{O}_{5}}+{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}2HN{{O}_{3}}\] So, \[\left( N{{O}_{x}} \right),S{{O}_{2}}\]volatile organic compounds are considered as acidic gases. \[C{{O}_{2}}\]released by fossil fuels, burning of coal/wood etc., is a greenhouse gas. \[CO\](released by automobiles, fossil fuels) a \[N{{H}_{3}}\](from fertilizer, dye and lacquer industries) are found to be primary pollutant gases but have no role in acid rains.
