    VAM are :

    A) saprophytic bacteria

    B) saprophytic fungi

    C) symbiotic fungi

    D) symbiatic bacteria

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

VAM-Vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae. The mutually beneficial or symbiotic association of a fungus with the root of a higher plant is known as mycorrhiza. VAM helps in phosphate absorption from soil. It is an example of endomycorrhiza. Here, tips of fungal hypae pass into the cortical cells producing swollen vesicles or finely branched masses called arbuscules so called as vesicular-arbuscularmycorrhiza. Here, fungus obtains shelter and food from root and helps the roots in absorption of water, inorganic and organic nutrients and protection. Symbiotic bacteria like Rhizobium, a nitrogen fixing bacterium is a symbiont in root nodules of legumes. Saprotrophic bacteria (e. g., Pseudomonas') and saprophytic fungi are called osmotrophs because they absrob organic matter in solution form.
