AFMC AFMC Solved Paper-2005

  • question_answer
When \[\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\] is bubbled through a solution of barium peroxide in water :

    A) \[{{\text{O}}_{2}}\] is released

    B) carbonic acid is formed

    C) \[{{H}_{2}}{{O}_{2}}\] is formed

    D) no reaction occurs

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

This is Merck's process of preparing hydrogen preroxide. When\[\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{2}}\] is passed through  aqueous solution of \[\text{Ba}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\text{,}\,\text{BaC}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\]is precipitated and \[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\]is formed. \[Ba{{O}_{2}}+C{{O}_{2}}+{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{{}}BaC{{O}_{3}}\downarrow +{{H}_{2}}{{O}_{2}}\] \[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\]can also be prepared by reaction of\[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\text{S}{{\text{O}}_{\text{4}}}\]with hydrated barium peroxide \[Ba{{O}_{2}}.8{{H}_{2}}O+{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\xrightarrow{{}}BaS{{O}_{4}}\]\[+8{{H}_{2}}O+{{H}_{2}}{{O}_{2}}\]
