    Baking powder is:

    A) \[~NaHC{{O}_{3}}\]

    B) \[NaHC{{O}_{3}}.6{{H}_{2}}O\]

    C) \[N{{a}_{2}}C{{O}_{3}}\]

    D) \[N{{a}_{2}}C{{O}_{3}}.10{{H}_{2}}O\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Baking powder is chemically sodium bicarbonate \[(NaHC{{O}_{3}}).\] It also contains small amount of tartaric acid which neutralises the bitter effect of \[\text{N}{{\text{a}}_{\text{2}}}\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\]which is formed due to decomposition of \[\text{NaHC}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\] \[2NaHC{{O}_{3}}\xrightarrow{\Delta }N{{a}_{2}}C{{O}_{3}}+C{{O}_{2}}\uparrow +{{H}_{2}}O\]\[\text{NaHC}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\]is prepared as intermediate product during Solvay's process for the manufacture of \[\text{N}{{\text{a}}_{2}}\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}}\]as follows : \[\underbrace{N{{H}_{3}}+{{H}_{2}}O+NaCl+C{{O}_{2}}}_{Ammoniacal\,brine}\xrightarrow{{}}\]\[\underset{ppt.}{\mathop{NaHC{{O}_{3}}}}\,+N{{H}_{4}}Cl\]
