    Lanthanides and actinides resemble in:

    A) electronic configuration

    B) oxidation state

    C) ionisation energy

    D) formation of complexes

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

In lanthanide series, the first inner transition series, is characterised by the filling of 4f orbitals in the atoms and consists of fourteen elements from cerium (58) to lutetium (71). In actinide series, the second inner transition series involves filling of \[5f\] orbitals and consist of 14 elements from thorium (90) to lawrencium (103). Lanthanides and actinides are collectively called rare earth elements. Similarities of lanthanides and actinides are (i) Predominant oxidation state of both is +3 (ii) Both involve filling of \[(n-2)f\]orbital (iii) Both are highly electropositive and very reactive (iv) Both exhibit decrease in atomic and ionic size (lanthanide and actinide contraction) with increase in atomic number (v) Both show masulphate and perchlorate of both formgnetic properties (vi) The nitrate, ed in +3 oxidation state are soluble where as their hydroxides, carbonates and fluorides are insoluble.
