In electro refining of copper some gold is deposited at:

    A) cathode

    B) electrode

    C) cathode mud

    D) anode mud

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Blister copper obtained from the Bessemer convenor is purified first by poling to get 99.5% pure copper and then the electrolytic refining to get copper of very high purity (99.95%-99.99%). Impure copper usually contains Ag, Au, Ni, Zn, Fe, Pb, Sn etc., as impurity. Impure metal is taken as anode dipped in the acidified solution of \[CuS{{O}_{4}}.\]The  impurities of Ni, Fe and Zn pass into solution as sulphate while impurities of Ag, Au and Sn etc. are thrown down as anode mud (below anode).
