Which of the following product is formed by the reaction of sulphur dioxide with chlorine  in presence of sunlight?

    A) \[S{{O}_{2}}Cl\]

    B) \[S{{O}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}}\]

    C) \[SOC{{l}_{2}}\]

    D) \[S{{O}_{3}}Cl\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

In the presence of sunlight \[S{{O}_{2}}\]and \[C{{l}_{2}}\] react  to form sulphuryl chloride \[S{{O}_{2}}+C{{l}_{2}}\xrightarrow{hv}\underset{sulphuryl\,chloride}{\mathop{S{{O}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}}}}\,\] In the above reaction \[S{{O}_{2}}\]behaves as an unsaturated compound and combines with oxygen, chlorine, lead dioxide etc., to form addition products. \[SOC{{l}_{2}}\] (thionyl chloride) is used to prepare chloroalkanes from alcohols in presence of pyridene. \[R-OH+SOC{{l}_{2}}\xrightarrow{Pyridine}R-Cl\] \[+S{{O}_{2}}(g)+HCl(g)\]
