Solve the following problems. X and Y together can do a piece of work in 6 days. X alone can do it 10 days, what time will Y require to do it when working alone :

    A)                  4 days

    B)                  6 days

    C)                  15 days

    D)                  18 days

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

                     \[\because \,x\,and\,y\]can do a piece of work in 6 days, then\[\left( x+y \right)'s\] one day work = \[\frac{1}{6}th\,part\] and\[x\] alone can do the same work in 10 days and \[\text{A }\!\!'\!\!\text{ s}\] one day work = \[\frac{1}{10}th\,part.\] Now B's one day work =\[\frac{1}{6}-\frac{1}{10}\]          \[=\frac{5-3}{30}=\frac{2}{30}=\frac{1}{15}\]
