  • question_answer
The number of moles of oxygen obtained by the electrolytic decomposition of 90 g water is:

    A) 2.5

    B) 5

    C) 7.5

    D) 10

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Water is electrolysed as follows \[\underset{36\,g}{\mathop{2{{H}_{2}}O}}\,2{{H}_{2}}\underset{1\,\,mol}{\mathop{+\,{{O}_{2}}}}\,\] 36 g \[{{H}_{2}}O\]yield = 1 mol of oxygen 1 g of \[{{H}_{2}}O\]will yield \[=\frac{1}{36}\] of \[{{O}_{2}}\] \[\therefore \] 90 g of water will yield \[\frac{1}{36}\,\times 90\] mol of \[{{O}_{2}}\] =2.5 mol of \[{{O}_{2}}\]
