    Hans Christian Gram (1884) develpoed a staining technique with the help of which all bacteria can be grouped into two categories :                 Gram negative bacteria (-) : These have thin cell wall which loses crystal violet stain when washed with alcohol and takes up red colour of saffranin when counter stained                 Gram positive bacteria : These have thick cell wall comperatively to Gram negative bacteria and do not lose crystal violet, stain after washing with alcohol. Thus remain purple.
