    In an examination, 52% candidates failed in English and 42% failed in Mathematics. If 17% candidates failed in both English and Mathematics, what percentage of candidates passed in both the subjects?

    A)  18%

    B)  21%

    C)  23%

    D)  25%

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

     E = English, M = Mathematics % of candidates failed in English \[=\,\,\,\,n(E)=52\] % of candidates failed in Maths \[=\,\,\,\,\,\,n(M)=42\] % of candidates failed in both subjects             \[=\,\,\,\,n(E\cap M)=17\]                 \[\therefore \,\,\,n(E\cup M)=52+42-17\]                 \[=94-17=77%\] % of candidates passed in both subjects \[=\,\,\,(100-77)%=\]
