  • question_answer
If the expression \[{{x}^{3}}+3{{x}^{2}}+4x+k\]has a factor x + 5, then what is the value of k?

    A) -70

    B) 70

    C) 48

    D) 48

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    Here, x + 5 is a factor. So, \[x+5=0~\Rightarrow x=-5\] Now,\[~{{x}^{3}}+3{{x}^{2}}+4x+k\] =   \[{{\left( -5 \right)}^{3}}+3\times {{\left( -5 \right)}^{2}}+4\times \left( -5 \right)+k\] \[=-125+75-20+k~-70+k\] Now, \[-70+k=\text{ }0~\therefore k=\mathbf{70}\]
