    [d] Let the numbers are x, y. \[x-\,y=3\]         ? (1) \[{{x}^{2}}-\,{{h}^{2}}=39\] \[\Rightarrow (x-y)\,\,(x+y)=39\] \[\Rightarrow x+y=13\]   ? (2) \[Adding\,\,eqn\,\,(1)\,\,and\,\,(2)\] \[x+y+x-\,y=16\] \[\Rightarrow x=8\] \[\therefore \,\,\,y=5\] Hence, 8 is the larger number.
