In a row of girls, if Madhu, who is tenth from the left, and Veena, who is ninth from the right interchange their places, Madhu becomes fifteenth from the left. How many girls are there in the row?

    A) 16

    B) 18

    C) 23

    D) 22

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Given ranking in the row is as follows
    \[\text{Left}\xrightarrow{{}}\overset{\text{Madhu}}{\mathop{10th}}\,\]
    \[\overset{\text{Veena}}{\mathop{9th}}\,\,\xrightarrow{{}}\text{Right}\]
    After interchange.
    \[\text{Left}\xrightarrow{{}}\overset{\text{Madhu}}{\mathop{15th}}\,\]
We see that interchanging the places rank of Madhu changes 5 places than the previous ranks which implies Veena was at 15th position of the row and adding 8 to the rank of Madhu will give the total number of girls in the row which is
    \[15+8=23\]
