Seventy five men are employed to lay down a railway line in 3 months. Due to certain emergency conditions, the work was to be finished in 18 days. How many more men should be employed to complete the work in the desired time?                                                                                                                   [SSC (CPO) 2014]

    A) 300

    B) 326

    C) 350

    D) 375

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

75 men can lay down railway line in 3 months,
    i.e.        \[(3\times 30=90\,\,\text{days)}\]
Now, let x men can lay down railway line in 18 days.
    We know that,
    \[{{M}_{1}}{{D}_{1}}={{M}_{2}}{{D}_{2}}\]                                   … (i)
    Here,     \[{{M}_{1}}=75,\]\[{{D}_{1}}=90\]
    \[{{M}_{2}}=x,\]\[{{D}_{2}}=18\]
On putting the values in Eq. (i), we get
    \[75\times 90=x\times 18\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[x=\frac{75\times 90}{18}\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=75\times 5=375\,\,\text{men}\]
\[\therefore \]375 men can lay down railway line in 18 days.
Now, number of more man required will be
    \[=375-75=300\,\,\text{men}\]
