Zinc and copper are in the ratio 5: 3 in 400 g of an alloy. How much of copper (in grams) should be added to make the ratio 5: 4?                                                                                         [SSC (CGL) 2014]

    A) 72

    B) 200

    C) 50

    D) 66

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Quantity of zinc in the alloy \[=\frac{5}{5+3}\times 400\]
    \[=\frac{5}{8}\times 400=250\,\,g\]
and quantity of copper \[=\frac{3}{5+3}\times 400\]
    \[=\frac{3}{8}\times 400=150\,\,g\]
Let required quantity of copper be \[x\,\,g.\]
    \[\frac{250}{150+x}=\frac{5}{4}\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[1000=750+5x\]\[\Rightarrow \]\[5x=250\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]               \[x=50\]
