    In a race of 1 km, A can beat B by 40 m and B can beat C by 50 m. With how much distance can A beat C in a 0.5 km race?

    A) 42 m

    B) 43 m

    C) 44 m

    D) 46 m

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    When A runs 1000m,
    then      B runs 960 m,
    and when B runs 1000 m,
    then      C runs 950 m.
    i.e. C runs 5% less than B
    So, when A = 1000
    \[\Rightarrow \]   B = 960
    \[\Rightarrow \]   C = 912
    \[\therefore \]When A = 500 \[\Rightarrow \] C = 456
    So, A will beat C by 44 m.
