In an examination, 65% students passed in Mathematics and 60% passed in History, 40% passed in both of the subjects. If 90 students failed in History and Mathematics both, then what is the total number of students who appeared in the examination?

    A) 600

    B) 650

    C) 700

    D) 750

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] Clearly 35% students failed in Maths; 40% failed in History and 60% failed in both subjects. Thus the number of students who actually failed in one or both subjects \[=\left( 35+40-60 \right)%\]i.e. 15% of total students. \[\therefore 15%\,\,of\,\,x=90\] So, \[x=\frac{90\times 100}{15}=600\]
