  • question_answer
Under standard condition, what is the potential for the reaction? \[\operatorname{Sn}(s)+2F{{e}^{3\,+}}(aq)\,\,\xrightarrow{{}}\,\,2F{{e}^{2\,+}}(aq)+S{{n}^{2\,+}}(aq)\]\[E{{{}^\circ }_{F{{e}^{3\,+}}/F{{e}^{2\,+}}}}\,\,=\,\,0.77\,V\]

    A)  - 0.91 V

    B)  +0.91 V

    C)  - 0.41 V

    D)  +0.41 V

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    Half cell reactions are \[[F{{e}^{3\,+}}+e\,\xrightarrow{{}}\,\,F{{e}^{2\,+}},\,\,E_{F{{e}^{3+}}/F{{e}^{2+}}}^{{}^\circ }=0.77\,\,V]\,\,\times \,\,2\] \[\operatorname{Sn}\,\,\xrightarrow{{}}\,\,S{{n}^{2+}}+\,\,2e, \,E_{Sn/S{{n}^{2\,+}}}^{{}^\circ }=\,\,+\,\,0.14\,V\] Adding Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get \[2F{{e}^{3\,+}}+\,\,Sn\,\xrightarrow{{}}\,\,2F{{e}^{2\,+}}+Sn\] \[E_{cell}^{{}^\circ }=0.77+0.14V=0.91V\]
