  • question_answer
A boy of mass 50 kg is standing at one end on a boat of length 25 m and mass 200 kg. If he starts running and when he reaches the other end he has velocity 2 m/s with respect to the boat. The final velocity of the boat is (in m/s).

    A)  \[\frac{2}{3}\]

    B)  \[\frac{2}{5}\]

    C)  \[\frac{8}{9}\]

    D)  \[\frac{5}{7}\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Let v be the velocity of the boat with respect to water then from conservation of linear momentum. \[\left( 200+50 \right) v+50\times 2 =50\times 0+200\times 0\] \[250\,v=-\,100\] \[v=-\frac{2}{5}m/s\] \[\left| v \right|=\frac{2}{5}m/s\] The negative sign indicates that velocity of boat is opposite to the velocity of boy.
