In Young's double slit experiment, the separation between slits is halved and the distance between slits and tin screen is doubled. The fringe width is

    A) unchanged

    B) halved

    C) doubled

    D) quadrupled

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    As, fringe width \[\beta  =\frac{D\lambda }{d}\]where, \[\operatorname{d}= separation between slits\] \[\operatorname{D} =distance\,\,between slits and the screen.\] when d is halved and D is doubled. Consider    \[\operatorname{d}=\,\,\frac{l}{2}x\]    \[\operatorname{D}=2x\] Thus,       \[\beta =\frac{2\times \lambda }{\frac{1}{2}\times }=4\,\lambda \] So, fringe width p will become four times.
