On dissolving moderate amount of sodium metal in liquid \[N{{H}_{3}}\] at low temperature, which of the following does not occur?

    A) Blue colored solution is formed

    B) \[N{{a}^{+}}\]ions are formed in the solution

    C) Liquid ammonia becomes good conductor of electricity

    D) Liquid ammonia remains diamagnetic

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

[c] Liquid ammonia becomes good conductor of electricity. Na is alkali metal. Dilute solutions of alkali metals in liquid ammonia are dark blue in colour. Liquid ammonia remains diamagnetic but blue coloured solution are paramagnetic due to presence of large number of unpaired \[2{{e}^{-}}(N{{H}_{3}})\,y\to \,\left[ \uparrow {{e}^{-}}(N{{H}_{3}})y \right]\left[ \downarrow {{e}^{-}}(N{{H}_{3}})y \right]\] These solutions of alkaline metals in liquid ammonia are good conductors of electricity due to the presence of ammoniated cations and electrons. Metal ions are formed in the solution vigorously.
