An electromagnetic pulse of energy \[3\times {{10}^{-2}}\] Joule when incident on a perfectly reflecting mirror produces an impulse of:

    A) \[3\times {{10}^{-10}}kg\,\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]

    B) \[{{10}^{-10}}kg\,\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]

    C) \[8\times {{10}^{-10}}kg\,\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]

    D) \[2\times {{10}^{-10}}kg\,\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    From formula Impulse = change in momentum. Also, momentum of incident photon is given by \[p=\frac{h}{\lambda }\] A perfect reflection implies the same momentum \[\therefore \] change in momentum is given as, \[\Delta p=p-(-p)=2p=2\left[ \frac{E}{c} \right]\]               ?..(i) \[\left( \therefore \,\,E=\frac{hc}{\lambda }=pe \right)\] Here,            \[E=3\times {{10}^{-2}}\]Joule Putting the given value in equation (i), we get \[\Delta p=2\times \frac{3\times {{10}^{-2}}}{3\times {{10}^{-8}}}\] \[\Delta p=2\times {{10}^{8}}kg\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]
