    2. Sand dunes are stationary and do not shift their position. Which of the above statements is/are correct?

    A)  1 only

    B)  2 only

    C)  Both 1 and 2

    D)  neither 1 nor 2

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] Barkhan is a typical sand dune which is crescent shape and is situated perpendicular to the main direction of the wind. Sand dunes are not stationary and keep on moving forward in the direction of the wind. This is due to shifting of sand from the windward slope to the leeward slope. When the wind is not fully loaded with acquired sand, it sweeps up more sand from the windward slope, and drops it over the crest, where it streams down the slip face. By subtraction of sand on the windward slope and its addition to the slip face, the sand dune travels forward in the direction of the wind.
