    [b] The cultivation of saffron is a traditional art. In India, 5.707 hectares of land comes under its cultivation. Its annual production is around sixteen thousand kilograms. The state of Jammu and Kashmir tops the list of the saffron growing 'rates in India. It can be gauged from the fact that out of the total 5,707 hectares of land under its cultivation 4,496 Hectares lie exclusively in Jammu and Kashmir. Maharashtra far excels all other states and produces more than 54 per cent of the total jowar production of India. As many as 22 districts of Maharashtra produce jowar as it is the staple food of the people and two crops in a year are raised here. First is sown just before the onset of the monsoon and the second is sown after the retreat of the monsoon. In some districts to the south of Pune, as much as 80 per cent of the cultivated area is devoted to jowar. Castor seed is produced mainly in 3 states in India - Gujarat, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. Apart from the Southern areas, castor seed is produced in all parts of Gujarat making Gujarat the largest producer of Castor Seeds. Rajasthan is the second largest castor seed producing state in India. Castor seed is cultivated in July to August and arrivals start during December. Andhra Pradesh is the third largest castor seed producing state in India. Sesame is the oldest indigenous oil plant with longest history of its cultivation in India. India is still the world leader with the maximum (25.8%) production from the largest (29.8%) area and highest (40%) export of Sesame in the world.
