With reference to the earth's interior, study the following statements:

    A)  Primary waves are longitudinal waves and can pass through liquids, solids and gases alike

    B)  Secondary waves are analogous to light waves and can travel through gases only

    C)  Surface waves are the fastest and travel through the earth's crust only

    D)  The earthquake waves travel along straight paths in the earth's interior. Which of the above statements is correct?

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] Secondary waves cannot pass through gases and do not reach the earth's centre. Surface waves are the slowest of all the earthquake waves. They travel at on average velocity of 3 km/sec as compared to secondary waves (4km/sec) and primary waves (8km/sec). The earthquake waves do not travel along straight paths; they follow curved paths because they suffer refraction due to varying density within the earth.
