What causes high pressure in the sub-tropical zone?

    A)  Low temperature

    B)  Divergence of air

    C)  Convergence of air

    D)  Descending of air

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] Air rises up in the equatorial region due to high temperature there and is diverted northwards north and south in the northern and southern hemisphere respectively due to rotation of the earth. They become sufficiently cold after reaching sufficient height and start descending at the Tropic of Cancer in the north and Tropic of Capricorn in the south. Thus a huge pressure area is created in these areas.
