          A cistern has two pipes. One can fill it with water 8 h and other can empty it in 5 h. In how many hours will the cistern be emptied if both the pipes are opened together when 3/4 of the cistern is already full of water?

    Solution :

       Part of cistern emptied in 1 h \[=\frac{1}{5}-\frac{1}{8}=\frac{8-5}{40}=\frac{3}{40}\] \[\therefore \]\[\frac{3}{40}\]part is emptied in 1 h \[\therefore \]\[\frac{3}{4}\]part is emptied in \[\frac{40}{3}\times \frac{3}{4}=10\,\,h\]
