A leak was found in a ship when it was 77 km from the shore. It was found that the leak admits 2.25 tonnes of water in 5.5 min, 92 tonnes will suffice to sink the ship. But the pumps can throw out 12 tonnes an hour. Find the average rate of sailing at which the ship may reach the shore as she begins to sink

    A)  10.5 km/h

    B)  14.5 km/h

    C)  9.75 km/h

    D)  13 km/h

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    \[\because \]Water admits in 5.5 min = 225 tonnes
    \[\therefore \]Water admits in 60 min \[=\frac{225}{55}\times 60\]
    \[=\frac{1350}{55}\] tonnes
After pumps, water contains in boat in 60 min
    \[=\frac{1350}{55}-12=\frac{690}{55}\]tonnes
\[\because \]\[\frac{690}{55}\]tonnes water contam in boat in 1 hr
\[\therefore \] 92 tonnes water contain in boat in
    \[\frac{55}{690}\times 92=\frac{22}{3}\]
    Required speed \[=\frac{77}{\frac{22}{3}}=\frac{231}{22}=10.5\,\,kim/h\]
