    The ratio of males and females in a town in 7 : 8 respectively and the percentage of children among males and females is 25% and 20% respectively. If the number of adult females in the town is 235200. What is the total population of town?

    Solution :

    Total population of town
    \[=15\times \frac{\text{Number}\,\,\text{of}\,\,\text{males}}{\text{Number}\,\,\text{of}\,\,\text{females}}=\frac{7}{8}\]
    \[\therefore \]Number of males and females \[=7x\] and \[8x\]
    Number of male children \[=25%\]of \[7x\]
    \[=\frac{25}{100}\times 7x=1.75x\]
    Number of female children \[=20%\] of\[8x=\frac{20}{100\times 8x}=1.6x\]
    \[\therefore \] Number of adult female\[=8x-1.6x=6.4x\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[6.4x=235200\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[x=\frac{235200}{6.4}=36750\]
    \[\therefore \] Total population of town\[=15\times 36750=551250\]
