    It takes eight hours for a 600 km journey, if 120 km is done by car and the rest by bus. It takes 20 min more, if 200 km is done by car and the rest by bus. What is the ratio of the speed of the car to that of the speed of the bus?

    Solution :

    Speed of car = x km/h and speed of bus = y km/h According to question, \[\frac{120}{x}+\frac{480}{y}=8\]                                ?(i)             \[\frac{200}{x}+\frac{400}{y}=8\frac{1}{3}\]                ?(ii) By solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get     \[15y+60x=24y+48x\] \[\therefore \]      \[12x=9y\Rightarrow \frac{x}{y}=\frac{3}{4}\]
