    How much pure alcohol has to be added to 400 ml of a solution containing 15% of alcohol to change the concentration of alcohol in the mixture to 32%?

    A) 60 ml

    B)  100 ml

    C)  128 ml

    D)  68 ml

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    Alcohol \[=\left( \frac{15}{100}\times 400 \right)\text{mL}=60\,\,\text{mL}\]
    Water = 340 mL
    Let x mL of alcohol be added.
    Then,    \[\frac{60+x}{400+x}\times 100=32\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[\frac{60+x}{400+x}=\frac{32}{100}=\frac{8}{25}\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[1500+25x=3200+8x\]
    \[\Rightarrow \]   \[17x=1700\]
    \[\therefore \]      \[x=100\]
