The product of two numbers is 120 and the sum their squares is 289. What would be the different between the two numbers?

    A)              3

    B)  5

    C)  7

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    Suppose, the numbers are x and y, then by question, \[x\times y=120\] and \[{{x}^{2}}+{{y}^{2}}=289\] As we know, \[{{(x-y)}^{2}}={{x}^{2}}+{{y}^{2}}-2xy\] \[=({{x}^{2}}+{{y}^{2}})-2xy=289-2\times 120\] \[=289-240=49={{7}^{2}}\] \[\therefore \]      \[x-y=7\]
