These are the natural ecosystems with a high diversity of locally endemic species, which are not found or are rarely found outside the region. To qualify as a biodiversity hotspot, a region must contain atleast 0.5% or 1500 species of Vascular plants as endemic and it has to have lost atleast 70% of its primary vegetation. In India, three regions as Eastern Himalayas, Indo-Burma region and Western. Gnats are biodiversity hotspots.
