12th Class Chemistry Sample Paper Chemistry Sample Test Paper-2

  • question_answer
Miss Fleming was asked to synthesized alcohol by acidic hydration of 1-butene. She was unaware of the fact that the vessel she used had some coating of a metal, and in addition to alcohol (b.p. 373 K), compound-Y (b.p. 353 K) was also isolated. X forms bisulphite compound as well as 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazone. Separation of alcohol could be made by physical as well as chemical methods. Answer the following questions, based on above passage. (a) How are alcohol acid X formed?                                                                                                                     [1] (b) Can alcohol acid X give iodo form test?                                                                                                                       [1] (c) Give different methods of separation.                                                                                                                        [1]

    Answer:

Since X forms bisulphite and 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazones, it means X has carbonyl group formed due to oxidation of alcohol. This oxidation is due to coating of metal (Cu). (b) Alcohol and X both give iodoform test [1] (c) Alcohol and X can be separated by          [1] (i) distillation   (ii) bisulphite formation Only (X) forms bisulphite complex (solid) which can be decomposed.
