    The main sources of pollution in the Ganga river has been identified due to :
    (a) The discharge of untreated urban sewage and industrial waste.
    (b) Bathing of canle, washing of clothes and immersing of dead bodies.
    (c) Large scale run-off from agricultural fields where farmers use excessive pesticides, insecticides and chemical fertilizers.
    (d) Discharge of hot emuents from thermal power plants.
    (e) Coal mining activities in the Dhanbad and Asansol area is another cause of pollution in Ganga river.
    (f) Industries have emerged on large scale in Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi and Kolkata.
    (g) These industries throw most of their poisonous waste into the river.
