Baggy trousers and the phenta (hat) was added to long collarless coats, with boots and a walking stick to complete the look of the gentleman. Western clothing was adopted readily by many dalit groups who had converted to Christianity. They regarded western clothes as a sign of modernity and progress. There were many Indians who felt that use of western clothes would lead to loss of traditional cultural identity. Those Indians derided and mocked those who wore western clothes.
