    B)  2 only

    C)  3 only

    D)  1, 2 and 3

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Perihelion is the position when the earth is nearest to the sun. This occurs on January 3 when the distance between the earth and the sun is 147.3 million km. Aphelion is the position when the earth is farthest from the sun. This occurs on July 4 when the distance between the earth and the sun is about 152 million km. Solstice is the time when the sun is at its greatest distance from the equator and the sun's rays are vertical either at the Tropic of Cancer or at the Tropic of Capricorn. Obviously, solstice occurs twice in a year, once when the sun's rays are vertical over the Tropic of Cancer and the other when the sun's rays are vertical over the Tropic of Capricorn. Summer solstice occurs on June 21 or 22 when the sun's rays are vertical over the Tropic of Cancer. Winter solstice occurs on December 21 or 22 when the sun's rays are vertical over the Tropic of Capricorn.
