How have the gases in air helped life on the earth?

    Answer:

The atmosphere is a mixture of several gases: Nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, argon, neon, helium, hydrogen. Krypton, Xenon and methane. Nitrogen is the most abundant gas in the air which is an inactive gas used in packaged food so that they remain fresh. Nitrogen is required for plant growth. Oxygen is essential for living beings for respiration. Oxygen supports burning so an adequate supply of it is necessary to burn fuels. Mountaineers and divers carry oxygen cylinders to help them breathe when oxygen content is low in the air. Carbon dioxide is required by plants to make food in sunlight by the process of photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide does not help in burning, hence it is used to extinguish fire. It is also dissolved in water to make soft drinks. Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas along with methane and nitrous oxide which trap heat during the day and keep the surface temperature warm at night. This is called the greenhouse effect. Helium is used as an inert shield for arc welding to pressurize the fuel tanks of liquid fuelled rockets and in supersonic wind tunnels. It is also used as light weight aircraft fuel and also combined with hydrogen in air balloons. Krypton is used commercially as a filling gas for energy-saving fluorescent lights and also used in some flash lamps for high-speed photography.
