What is global warming? How is it caused? What can we do to reduce it?

    Answer:

Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are the greenhouse gases that trap heat in the atmosphere and keep the surface temperature warm. This is called the greenhouse effect. However if, there is too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, carbon dioxide accumulates and overloads the atmosphere. Certain waste management and agricultural practices aggravate the problem by releasing other potent global warming gases, such as methane and nitrous oxide which raise the temperature of the atmosphere causing global warming. Other gases, such as chlorofluorocarbons, have heat trapping potential and degrade the ozone layer allowing harmful ultraviolet rays to reach the earth's surface. The following measures can be taken to reduce global warming: (i) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Reduce the buying of new products, resulting in a smaller amount of waste. Consider buying eco-friendly products. Recycle unwanted paper, plastic cans, aluminum foils, etc. (ii) Driving less or adopting the practice of carpools saves fuel and helps in reducing global warming. (iii) Go solar: Getting solar panels installed at homes, factories, offices, etc. (iv) Reduce waste as landfills are a major contributor of methane and other greenhouse gases. (v)Turning off lights and electronic devices saves electricity thereby saving water and coal from which we get electricity. (vi) Planting trees, using clean fuel e.g. electric smart cars, or cars run on vegetable oil, conserving water, spreading awareness and educating people about global warming and its after effects.
