Define age structure, death rate and birth rate.                                      [NCERT]

    Answer:

    (a) Age structure in the composition of population refers to the number of people in different age groups in a country. The population of a nation is generally grouped in three categories.
    India's age structure is:
    0-14 years - Children      = 34.4%
    15 - 59 years - Adults        = 58.7%
    60 and above - Senior citizens = 6.9%
    (b) Death rate is the number of deaths per thousand persons in a year.
    (c) Birth rate is the number of live births per thousand persons in a year. It is a major component of growth because in India, birth rates have always been higher than death rate.
