Discuss the major components of population growth.                   [NCERT; KVS 2008]
    Or
Describe the three components of population growth.                             [NCT2008]

    Answer:

Major components of population growth are:
    (a) Birth rates, death rates and migration. Birth rate is a major component of growth because in India, birth rates have always been higher than death rates.
    (b) Due to improved health facilities, death rate has been declining in India. High birth rates and declining death rates in 1980 resulted in higher rate of population growth. Since 1981, birth rates have also started declining gradually, resulting in gradual decline in the rate of population growth.
    (c) Migration is the third component of population growth. International migration changes the size of the population. Internal migration does not change the size of the population but influences the distribution of population within the nation. Migration changes the size of population of rural and urban areas.
