(a) India's constitution was framed under very difficult circumstances because of the trauma caused by the partition of the country. At least ten lakh people were killed on both sides of the border in partition related violence. (b) The existence of the 560 odd princely states was another problem. These states has been given the choice to join or not to join any successor government or governments. They also had the power to enter into any type of political arrangement with them. (c) Moreover, the founding fathers had to frame a Constitution which would ensure social and economic equality and which would give every Indian a chance to progress and achieve his/her full potential.
